Armstrong was born in Annfield Plain, County Durham, to a Methodist lay preachers family. He attended Annfield Plain Junior School and then went on to study at Consett Grammar School. He would later go on to study at the Royal Shakespeare Company and eventually pursue an acting career at various colleges. Prior to his acting career he was a bricklayer, gravedigger and was also an assistant stage manager for Cambridge Arts Theatre.
He is married to Sue Armstrong and together they have three sons - Tom, Joe and Dan.
He is a supporter of AFC Wimbledon, a similarity that he shares with his New Tricks counterpart.
- Despite having left New Tricks in 2013, Armstrong is still in regular touch with his former co-workers as well as the cast that he never got a chance to work with - Nicholas Lyndhurst and Tamzin Outhwaite.
